The DiSC Assessment

The DiSC assessment is one of the most popular personality assessments to date, completed by over 10 million people a year for the purpose of recruitment, personal development, team building and coaching.

Based on the early theory of Marston in the 1920?s, and later developed by Walter Clarke in the 1950?s, the DiSC assessment measures personality across four dimensions, namely: Dominance, influence, Steadiness and Conscientious.

Those who are Dominant tend to be direct, strong-willed and forceful. Individuals who show high levels of influence are typically sociable, talkative and lively. Those who score highly on the steadiness dimension are often gentle, accommodating and soft-hearted. Finally, conscientious individuals tend to be private, analytical and logical.

There are then eight ?styles? (Di, iD, iS, Si, SC, CS, CD, DC), which are combinations of two traits. These are used to more accurately provide personalized feedback about each type?s goals, fears, strengths and areas for self-development.

The DiSC assessment is an excellent tool for self-reflection and self-development. It popular because it is easy to understand and helps us to increase our self-knowledge of how we respond to conflict, what motivates us, what causes us stress and how we solve problems. DiSC assessments are also popular because they don?t just focus on individuals, it can be a useful tool to provide insights about how we interact and build relationships with others.

Like all personality assessments, the DiSC has received some scrutiny over the years, with some arguing that it is not an accurate measure of personality and that it ignores many of the fundamentals of personality. However, others argue that there is indeed scientific support for the reliability and validity of the DiSC assessment; making it a useful tool.
