7am to 8am | WHEN I COME IN THE MORNING, I GO TO THE OFFICE AND SIGN IN FOR THE DAY. THIS LETS EVERYONE KNOW THAT I AM HERE. I ALSO CHECK MY MAILBOX FOR THE DAY TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING IN IT. I THEN GO TO MY OFFICE ON THE SECOND FLOOR AND HANG UP MY COAT. |
8am to 9am | I TURN ON MY COMPUTER AND START CHECKING MY WORK EMAIL. I THEN LOG ON TO THE SYSTEM CALLED POWERSCHOOL. THEN I TRY TO CLEAN OFF MY DESK. IN THE PROCESS I MAY GET A CALL FROM ANOTHER TEACHER OR THE OFFICE . THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT A STUDENT OR THEY HAVE A PARENT WHO WANTS TO TELL ME ABOUT A STUDENT. |
9am to 10am | I NOW TRY TO FIND SOMETHING TO EAT AND TO SEE MY FIRST STUDENT. I NORMALLY GO TO THERE CLASSROOM TO GET THEM. I GET THEM AND BRING THEM BACK TO MY OFFICE. WE THEN START OUR COUNSELING SESSION. |
10am to 11am | I GET ANOTHER STUDENT AND DO THE SAME THING ALL DAY. I ASK THEM ALL SORTS OF QUESTIONS. I ALSO HAVE TO IMPUT NOTES IN THE COMPUTER AND THE FILES. SOMETIMES ANOTHER PARENT WILL CALL AND I WILL ALSO HAVE TO LOG THAT ON A PAPER. |
11am to 12pm | I see more students. |
12pm to 1pm | I see students and I may take a lunch during this time. |
1pm to 2pm | I GO BACK TO MY OFFICE AND TRY TO SEE ANOTHER STUDENT. I TRY TO FINISH WRITING PROGRESS NOTES FOR THE SESSION THAT WE HAD. I NORMALLY WILL GET STUDENTS DROPPING IN THAT HAVE PROBLEMS THAT ARE UNEXPECTED. THEY ARE NOT ON MY CASELOAD. BUT I SEE THEM ANYWAY. |
2pm to 3pm | I SEE ANOTHER STUDENT AND PREPARE FOR ANY MEETINGS THAT WE MAY HAVE AFTER SCHOOL. WE NORMALLY HAVE OUR MEETINGS AT 3PM |
3pm to 4pm | IF NO MEETING IS SCHEDULED. I DO MORE PAPER WORK. WHEN STUDENTS STAY AFTER SCHOOL THEY NORMALLY WANT TO HANG OUT IN MY OFFICE. IF A MEETING IS SCHEDULES EITHER I AM TAKING NOTES OR I HAVE TO CHAIR A MEETING. SO I READ FROM MY NOTES AND ASK QUESTIONS. I CHAIR THE CHILD STUDY TEAM AND WE MEET ABOUT STUDENTS. |

Yes I did. I had to interview twice. Once with a staff member and once with the principal.

not really, the last person left before I got there so I kind of had to wing it.

A masters in social work

A little. The kids are a lot different from the books.

Somewhat but I forgot a lot of it because I graduated like 12 years ago.

Just send a resume. Go to career builders.com. Also look in the local sunday’s newspaper.
What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
They would need a degree. A high level of patience. Also a good, warm, fuzzy heart. A passion for what they do.

A passion and a heart to do what’s right. Just really a willingness to want to help others.
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Make sure you are ready for the unexpected.
