TO IMPLEMENT INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TO YOUNG ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES. SKILLS INCLUDE COOKING, CLEANING, SOCIAL SKILLS, AND COMMUNITY BASED INSTRUCTION.

5am to 6am
6am to 7am
7am to 8am GET READY FOR WORK. ARRIVE AT 7:45 AND BE ON BUS DUTY, MAKING SURE ALL STUDENTS GET TO CLASS.
8am to 9am MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY GET STUDENTS READY FOR WORK AND DO THEIR CLASSROOM JOBS. TUESDAY AND THURSDAY GET READY FOR COLLEGE CLASS. FRIDAY DO WEEKLY STUDENT EVALUATIONS.
9am to 10am M/W ARRIVE AT STUDENT JOBSITES AND MONITOR PROGRESS. T/TH ARRIVE AT COLLEGE AND MONITOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN THEIR CLASS. FRIDAY WE ARE USUALLY OUT IN THE COMMUNITY ON A FIELD TRIP.
10am to 11am ARRIVE BACK ON CAMPUS WITH STUDENTS. DO SOME ACADEMICS, COOKING, CLEANING, AND SOCIAL SKILLS.
11am to 12pm GET LUNCH READY WITH THE STUDENTS. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE PLATES OUT AS WELL AS FORKS AND DRINKS. ASSIST STUDENTS IN SERVING LUNCH.
12pm to 1pm LUNCH AND CLEAN-UP WITH SOME FREE TIME FOR SOME STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE CLASSROOM JOBS.
1pm to 2pm ART WITH THE ART TEACHER UNTIL 1:45 M-F. WED. IS SPEECH WITH ALL STUDENTS.
2pm to 3pm GET READY TO GO HOME. SEND HOME PAPERS AND HEAD OFF TO THE BUSSES. LEAVE WORK AND GO HOME TO MY FAMILY.

How did you get your current job?
WHILE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I WORKED ON CAMPUS WHICH LED TO A LETTER OF RECCOMENDATION TO BE HIRED AS AN EMPLOYEE.

What was the application process?
FILED AN APPLICATION, HAD A RESUME, TOOK A BASIC READING, WRITING, AND MATH TEST.

Did you have to interview for your current job? If yes, what did the interview process entail?
THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AS WELL AS THE HEAD TEACHER AND THE INTERVIEW TEAM FOR THE SCHOOL ALL INTERVIEWED ME FOR THE POSITION. THE INTERVIEW WAS ABOUT 30 MINUTES.

If you can remember, what questions were you asked during the interview?
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A STUDENT WAS HAVING A SEIZURE? WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A STUDENT BECAME LOST IN THE COMMUNITY? DO YOU KNOW CPR/FIRST AID? TELL US ABOUT YOUR QUALIFICATIONS. THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHERS THEY ASKED AS WELL.

Do you feel your employer properly prepared you for your job? Explain.
YES, THEY MAKE SURE WE GO TO THE PROPER MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS TO FURTHER OUR KNOWLEDGE OF OUR DUTIES.

JUST MAKING SURE WE HAVE CPR/FIRST AID AND KNOWING THE ROUTINE OF THE CLASS.

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
TO HAVE A GOOD RESUME SHOWING THEIR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS THEIR EAGERNESS TO WORK IN SUCH A FIELD. HAVING SPECIAL CLASSES AND A DEGREE WOULD BE AN ADDED BONUS.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
ABILITY TO WORK SIDE BY SIDE AND ONE ON ONE WITH PEOPLE AS WELL AS THOSE WITH DISABILITES ON A CONSTANT BASIS. LIVING SKILLS IS A PLUS SUCH AS COOKING, CLEANING, CHECK WRITING, ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THE COMMUNITY ON A SAFE MANOR AS WELL AS THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, ORGANIZATION, AND COLLABORATIVE SKILLS. CPR AND FIRST AID IS A MUST.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
I THINK IT IS ADVISABLE BUT ONE COULD WALK INTO THIS POSITION AND SUCCEED AS LONG AS THEY POSSESS THE RIGHT SKILLS.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
BE READY, IN THIS FIELD ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION FOR MANY SITUATIONS YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF IN.

YES, I WOULD EVENTUALLY LIKE TO BECOME THE HEAD TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM.

I CANNOT IMAGINE A MORE REWARDING JOB THAN MINE. ALTHOUGH NOT ALL POSITIONS ENTAIL THE DUTIES I CARRY THIS JOB IS PERFECT FOR ME.
