Describe the type of organization you work for.
I work at a K-12 Public School Academy which currently has about 700 students.

Describe your job role and responsibilities.
I teach students ages 7-9 all core subject areas. My class size is limited to 24 students. I also teach an elective art course for students in grades 3-6.

Not only do I work with my students, but I also interact with staff members. I love that I get to work with so many people.

A day in the life of…

Please describe a typical workday for you in your current job:

5am to 6am
6am to 7am
7am to 8am Report to work at 7:30am. Doors open at 7:40 am. School officially begins at 7:50am. Take attendance and lunch count. Students go to electives at 8am.
8am to 9am Teach Art elective from 8:00-8:33. Currently working on collage. My students come back and silent read until 9am. They also eat their snack at this time.
9am to 10am Teach Guided reading. Read aloud The Rough Face Girl. Fill out Cinderella Comparison Chart as a class. Discuss characteristics of the book.
10am to 11am Students have centers: Practice X flashcards, read biography in small group, read aloud Holiday stories, write a letter to Santa, practice spelling words. The students are put in groups according to ability and they switch centers every 12 minutes.
11am to 12pm Lunch/recess
12pm to 1pm Break
1pm to 2pm Math- teaching fractions. The students are doing fairly well so we are working on 4th grade objectives in addition to the 2nd and 3rd grade ones.
2pm to 3pm Social Studies- read and discuss The Journal of Otto Peltonen, a story of a young Finnish Immigrant. Play the Immigration Game, which illustrates how difficult it was to come to America in the 1800’s. Have students write about the journey in their journals.
3pm to 4pm Students are dismissed. Grade papers, enter grades, prepare for tomorrow’s class.
4pm to 5pm More grading, preparation, work on next week’s plans.
5pm to 6pm Finally go home!

I can’t recall, but I’m on the interview team now and we ask the typical background questions, best practices, and how you get along with others.

Yes, there is a lot of professional development provided by my employer.

Yes, student teaching and certification.

Yes, I went through and intensive education program.

Yes, I was lucky to have a very organized master teacher work with me during my student teaching.

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
I would recommend that they not only complete student teaching, but substitute teach at all grade levels for at least 3 months.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
Teachers need to have pedagogy, be very organized and flexible.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Teachers need to hae certification from an accredited 4 year college or university

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Be prepared for almost anything during your first two years of teaching. Ask for a mentor to help guide you through your beginning years.

Is your current employment part of your overall career plan? Why or why not?
Yes, I plan on staying for at least 3 more years in order to see my first group of kids graduate.

What are your current career goals?
Eventually, I would like to be a curriculum director. I’m not ready to leave the classroom yet though.
