How you got your job

How did you get your current job?
a friend told me her boss needed someone full time and she couldn’t pick up the hours herself.

What was the application process?
I had to submit an application.

Did you have to interview for your current job? If yes, what did the interview process entail?
I interviewed with the owner of the company. It took about 15 minutes before she told me I was hired. She asked questions about my previous work history.

If you can remember, what questions were you asked during the interview?
i was asked about my previous work history. I also remember her asking me if I minded the laid-back atmosphere.

Do you feel your employer properly prepared you for your job? Explain.
Yes I do. There wasn’t much to learn since I am just transferring information from a piece of paper to the computer.

Was there training for your current position? If yes, what did it entail?
there was no training. I watched a coworker enter the inspection results a few times and I was on my way.

Do you feel your educational background prepared you for your job? Explain.
I think that typing class prepared me for it.

If applicable, do you feel your internship experience helped you prepare for your job?
I did not have an internship.

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
they would have to learn to type and keyboard. i would suggest taking an online typing course. they would also have to learn HUD specifications.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
the would have to know how to prioritize because there is little supervision. again typing and keyboarding are key. A background in accounting is helpful for the monthly reports.

no because I had no formal education when i started.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
get a radio. learn to type fast. bring your own lunch.

Long-term career plans

Is your current employment part of your overall career plan? Why or why not?
It is paying for me to go to school to do something completely different. I guess it is part of the plan, but not what I want to do career-wise.

What are your current career goals?
I am going to be a professional medical coder.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your career?
I don’t consider myself as having a career yet. In about a year I hope to be closer to it becoming a reality.
