Describe the type of organization you work for.
Hamilton Center is a regional behavioral health organization. It is a medium sized company but has been in business for quit some time. It offered mental health services for people who suffer from severe mental illness, addictions problems, and to children with mental illnesses and behavioral problems.
Describe your job role and responsibilities.
I supervise adults with severe mental illness in a group home setting. I supervise them in taking their medications, cooking their meals, and cleaning their home. I am also required to assist in completing these tasks as needed and provide two hours of group based instructions on some sort of daily living skill.

2 week paid vacation/sick days (they are all calculated into one catagory), medical, dental, eye insurance and tuition reembersment.

I feel given the time I have spent here I am grossly under compensated for my job

I am required to work with ten residents daily. I enjoy working with them but it can be stressful at times given their mental illness.

I work in a group home where 10 mentally ill adult men work. I like the home like atmosphere and it is really layed back and relaxed place to work.

Absolutely. It doesn’t pay much but it is very rewarding in other ways. The main goal of the residents is to move out on their own so when you get someone to that point it makes you feel good.
What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
Patience, patience and more patience. A lot of good social skills and computer skills. The residents can be trying at times and you have to be able to step back and remind yourself at times that they do have problems. You also have to have good social skills in communicating with the residents and coworkers. All of the charting is done on the computer.
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
not really but my job does require a high school diploma or GED
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Try it out for longer than a coupkle of weeks. This is one of those jobs that will grow on you.
