How you got your job

How did you get your current job?
Referral from another veterinarian who I applied for.

What was the application process?
My current boss contacted me and I submitted a resume and was invited for an interview.

Did you have to interview for your current job? If yes, what did the interview process entail?
Yes. I visited the clinic on a Saturday and spent the day following the other 2 doctors into appointments. They asked me a few medical questions (what’s the correct dose of insulin for a 10 ppound cat, etc). I ate lunch with the doctors and assistants and was offered the job later that afternoon.

If you can remember, what questions were you asked during the interview?
How much experience do you have doing spays/ neuters? Why did you become a vet? How did you like vet school? Do you know people in Chicago (I’m originally from Wisconsin)

Do you feel your employer properly prepared you for your job? Explain.
Yes – I was always free to ask questions

Was there training for your current position? If yes, what did it entail?
Yes – I was trained in vet school. The first 2-3 weeks of my current job I just followed the doctors around and learned how to conduct an appropriate exam on a pet.

Do you feel your educational background prepared you for your job? Explain.
Yes – I attended 4 years of professional school for my career.

If applicable, do you feel your internship experience helped you prepare for your job?

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Visit the website for the American Veterinary Medical Association (avma.org). Volunteer at local shelters, veterinary hospitals, and be sure to speak with a college advisor about requirements.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours?
Ability to work well with others, love of animals (of course), ability to work independently, self-motivator.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Yes – you have to complete at least 3-4 years of undergraduate college work to meet the veterinary school requirements, then you complete 4 years in vet school.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
I’s a very rewarding career, and go for it if it’s something you want to do. Willpower and motivation will take you a long way.
