Civil Engineer Career Profiles

Large construction projects need a civil engineer to keep the project on track and to ensure the finished product is safe and functional. Civil engineers design large construction projects and develop infrastructures. Their job includes not only overseeing and managing the design process, but also supervising construction and helping to maintain the finished project.

Civil engineers may be responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings, roads, bridges, and dams. Civil engineers design systems that deliver water to residential and commercial buildings, as well as the systems that remove sewage and wastes.

Those who choose a career as a civil engineer routinely work for the state or federal government, although they can work in the private sector as well. Some civil engineers are teachers, work in research, work for developers in the field of design, or work in the construction industry. Civil engineers who work for the government may do many of the same tasks as professionals in the private sector in terms of design and planning; however, they may also be in charge of conducting inspections to ensure compliance with code requirements.

The tasks of civil engineers can include analyzing surveys and data to plan projects, identifying potential environmental hazards and conducting a risk analysis, and applying for permits. Using design software, providing cost estimates, overseeing surveying operations, and presenting findings to the public are also tasks performed by civil engineers. Working on site may be required when projects are ongoing. Evening and weekend work may also be necessary to meet project deadlines.
