Long term care/nursing home. There are appx 18 sister facilities in Florida which are owned by a NYC based firm. My facility has appx 125 employees and the entire corporate employee count is appx. 2000.

I am responsible for the day to day maintenace/repair of a 120bed/40K sq. ft facility. I also handle capital improvements, remodel and compliance with state and federal guidelines/regulations. I obtain all competative bids, meet with all contractors and approve all internal and contracted projects.

I have daily contact with coworkers, family members and residents. The challenges associated with working with such a diverse mix of people from so many different backgrounds is challanging but I find it to be very enjoyable.

Inside of a residental facility made up of 60 resident rooms, dining areas , day rooms, etc. This is like a small contained city where you have politics, crime, dispare and every other emotion/action that you'd find in a major city only on a scale where you get a total view of what is going on. Its a unique place to be in and I find it to be both challanging and enjoyable.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

obtain training via the military, college or trade school in an engineering/construction related field. Once you have this, take management related studies and then apply for a line staff positon in a related field-work in it and understand it for several years. At this point you should be able to apply for a supervisory position and work your way up the ladder.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Technical skills, management skills are necessary but if you lack PEOPLE skills you will not be successful. If you are not a people person all the college degrees in the world won't help you.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Yes-lots of federal/state regulations which you must understand and have the technical background to address and correct issues

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Be patient-You maybe right in your recommendations but the owners have the ultimate right of last approval be they right or wrong-document, document and cya.
