Need a Master degree in counseling or student affairs. You don't need any licensure. I recommend seeking out a Career Services office in your local university to talk to a career counselor about local programs. Be willing to relocate considering there are not many positions available in any given city.

People skills is a must, self-confidence, counseling skills and knowing a little about college setting and how it works.

School is necessary. Experience is always a plus- as an intern or in your program's practicum.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Read "The Career Counselor's Handbook" by Figler & Bolles. Most career counselors around the country are happy to work together, so don't be afraid to contact other schools to ask questions!
