3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
|
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
I started with an entry level position and worked my way up. We have an internet site for Careers. Keep visiting the site and see if a position is available or even an entry level position, just to get your foot in the door. Go on the internet and research the company. If you have problems with interviewing, practice in front of a mirror.

What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
The person wanting a job like mine would need to be a team player.
Technical writing skills would be a plus.
Computer skills using different applications, i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook
Multitasking and the ability to switch gears. I am constantly being pulled way from the task at hand to address an urgent issue. This would include being able to prioritize these issues
I log and distribute the event maintenance requests. I have to ask myself which ones can I complete without routing. I determine what the priority is for every request.
Communication is so important. It is not always what you say but how you say. I have learned to ask questions if I am uncertain on any aspect of my job. I have learned to never put anything in an email that I would not want to see on the front page of the New York Times. Don't send email or leave a voice mail when you are angry. Write your email and save to read the next day. Don't use capital letters in email otherwise known as screaming.
Always check your spelling in voice mail and any written documents. Sometimes you may want another pair of eyes to take a look.
As I mentioned I mentor newer members of our team and what I have learned is that everyone has a different learning style. It takes a lot of patience to work with a new team member. One of the things I try to remember is how I felt or still feel when I am learning something new.
I take notes. Notes from meetings, conference calls, when I'm learning something new. There is so much information that I like to refer back to my notes. I use a lined pad of paper and when the pad is full, I keep in a file drawer to refer to. It may not makes sense to anyone else but I have referred to these notes many times. Also by writing something down it helps me remember.
I keep a steno pad by the phone to take notes from phone calls. Then it is all right there.
Willingness to do the mundane. Repetitive tasks such as inputting data for me is boring. What I try to remember is when I am going a mile a minute and wish for some mindless work.
Organizational skills would be at the top of my list. If you are not organized how can you actively approach a project. I clear the top of my desk every day before I leave, that way in the morning I come to an uncluttered desk. If there is something I need to address first I put it right by my computer.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Some college or work experience in the medical field. Any experinece on the workers' compensation field ia s defninite plus.
|
|
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Be patient. None of us learned our jobs overnight, that is part of the challenge. Ask lots of questions. If you are meeting with someone to learn a new task take notes. You don't need to take a lot, but when you are finally on your own you have something to refer to. If possible take or ask for screen shots. Don't answer your you cell phone off when being trained or if someone is speaking with you. I understand there are emergencies but I see this going on a lot. I may be needing assistance from someone and right in the middle of a conversation the person takes a call.
