Make sure you get at LEAST an Associates degree in drafting and design. Even if it's from a Community College. Then get plugged into a large company that will train you IE Home Depot or Lowes. Then from there start looking at becoming a design assistant at a firm and slowly work your way up as you gain experience.

Computer Aided Drafting skills is a must. You won't go far in Interior Design with out it, unless you are amazing at hand drafting, which is a lost art these days. Other things are product knowledge of general furniture, appliances, plumbing and retail design products.

Go to school first, make sure you love it. Good designers LOVE what they do and don't find it work.
