Make sure you get at LEAST an Associates degree in drafting and design. Even if it's from a Community College. Then get plugged into a large company that will train you IE Home Depot or Lowes. Computer Aided Drafting skills is a must. You won't go far in Interior Design with out it, unless you are amazing at hand drafting, which is a lost art these days. Other things are product knowledge of general furniture, appliances, plumbing and retail design products.

Yes at least an AA but better a BA

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Go to school first, make sure you love it. Good designers LOVE what they do and don't find it work.
