What field is your job in?

Accounting

  What is your job title?

Accounts Payable

Please provide a brief description of the firm or organization that you currently work for
(size and general description of what type of organization it is)

I work for a multi-company organization that provides a variety of taxi and other transportation services in the greater Washington DC area.

How long have you been employed in this position?

5 years.

How many hours do you work a week on average?

40

Please provide a BRIEF description of your duties and responsibilities. (job description)

I am responsible for processing invoices for each of our ten different taxi and related companies. This includes receipt of the invoice, securing the required supporting documentation for them, or securing approval for payment if backup is not available. Then, each invoice is "coded" with the particular account that the funds are to be paid from (for example "office supplies" or "building maintenance"). Finally, each invoice is entered into our accounting system, and checks are run each Friday. I am also responsible for computing and filing the Sales and Use Tax returns each month, as well as preparing bank reconciliations for three of our ten companies. Finally, I am responsible for invoicing those employees who have a company gas card for any overages above their monthly allowance.

What was your gross income last year? Please include any bonuses or incentives received.

34500.

What is your expected gross income for this year? Please include any bonuses or incentives you expect to receive.

37000

I have two weeks vacation, 401K (with the company matching half up to 4%), sick leave (which is pretty strict and does not begin until your 3rd day out; it is almost like a junior version of short term disability), and health and dental insurance. Other types of insurance are available, but I didn't opt for them (cancer insurance is one that I declined, for example)

Do you feel you are under/well/over compensated at your current position?

I feel that based on my workload as well as experience, that I am pretty well compensated in the position I hold now.

2. Work environment!

Does your job entail you working with others on a daily basis? Is this something you like/dislike about your job? Explain

I am required to communicate with my coworkers (especially supervisors and others in positions of authority), but do not interact with the public at all, and could really hide away in my cubicle most of the day if I desired to do so. I like this because the amount of interaction that I have with others is strictly determined by me.

Do you work collaboratively with supervisors/managers?

Yes

Do you work collaboratively with your co-workers?

No

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

The best thing that you can do is major in an accounting related field in a college or university. Otherwise, you should at least take a basic accounting course through your local school system. You could also, as I did, take an entry level position (such as receptionist) and ask for additional work (the office I work in happens to be an accounting office). In this way, I have been promoted twice over the past 6 years, with both of those promotions happening within months of each other (I have been in my current position for 5 years).

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

You should have a very good attention to detail, and should b

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
