Nonprofit communications

  What is your job title?

Coordinator, Marketing and Communications

Please provide a brief description of the firm or organization that you currently work for
(size and general description of what type of organization it is)

I work for a large nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of education, income and health for EVERYONE in New York City. There area about 130 employees. The organization is independently operated, but is part of a large network of nonprofit organizations across the country that work to solve community problems.

9 months

I usually work around 42 hours in a week. This can certainly vary, however, depending on that week's events and meetings.

Please provide a BRIEF description of your duties and responsibilities. (job description)

I support communications & marketing efforts through proofreading materials, copy-writing, research, a lot of organization. I use an online tool to manage the distribution of all our mass e-mailings. I write and edit our internal staff e-newsletter. I organize and manage our photography library. I help coordinate the production of materials that other staff members request, like e-vites.

I think I am well compensated.

2. Work environment!

Does your job entail you working with others on a daily basis? Is this something you like/dislike about your job? Explain

Yes, I work with others on a daily basis. I often act in a mediator/messenger role between our design team, the rest of my editorial team, and staff members who request materials. I often dislike this role because it feels like a waste of time; it would be more efficient--sometimes at least--for people requesting materials to speak directly to those who will produce them. Sometimes I like working with people. It gives me a chance to get to know my co-workers and makes the day more interesting.

Do you work collaboratively with supervisors/managers?

Yes

Do you work collaboratively with your co-workers?

Yes

Describe your work location (e.g., office, home, theatre, in the field) and what you like/dislike about working in it

I frequently work with my supervisors and co-workers to decide the best way to reach a goal--for example, how to format a mass e-mail in order to drive interest to an event.

Please rank in order of importance from 1-8 (1- most important 8- least important) Assign each number once.

  • 6 Income
  • 1 Work Environment - co-workers
  • 3 Work Environment - supervisors
  • 2 Benefits
  • 4 Hours
  • 7 Level of responsibility
  • 5 The actual "work" you do at your job

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Get an internship!!! I had 4 internships in college and each was very valuable for both the learning experience but also for building up a resume. There are tons of nonprofits who rely on interns. A good way to get your foot in the door for that first internship is to volunteer first and develop a relationship with a teacher or supervisor who can then recommend you. Because it's difficult to afford working for free, start by interning part-time so you can also have a part-time job. Or find an internship that is paid or offers a stipend (small amount of compensation, usually to cover travel expenses). Also, take advantage of activities at your school! You need writing experience to work in communications. Volunteer for your school newspaper or start blogging so you can build a portfolio of clips.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Writing & editing skills are REQUIRED. Although I do not write on a daily basis now, I need to be able to write well when writing/editing projects come up. You must be able to contribute to our marketing materials when needed. Communication and social skills; you'll work with a lot of different people. Also, you must be able to effectively communicate to your supervisor how your projects are going so s/he knows you are working towards success. Technical skills; On a daily basis, I use computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Dreamweaver, Cumulus (digital photo catalog), and Epsilon Dream (mass email distribution tool). ORGANIZATION SKILLS! There is always a lot going on, and you have to stay on top of all your projects. Know what you hav to do and when you have to do it; it's easy to let things slip.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

You need a BA to GET my job. However, someone who has all the skills above--with work experience in an office--could certainly be successful in my position, even if s/he doesn't have a formal college degree.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Always know what needs to get done, when it needs to get done, and figure out how to do it. Your boss will ask about projects and you have to have a good answer. Also, PROOFREAD EVERYTHING!
