I work at the State House (State Government) for the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security. I work under the House Chairman of the Committee. There are two other staffers that work for the same person, and Public Safety and Homeland Security is one of 27 Committees at the state level that researches particular subject matters relevant to current legislation.

work with others at all times. the work environment is clustered and crowded and busy always, loud at times and often difficult to focus and concentrate on your own tasks. when the phone rings, you never know who is going to be calling or what they are going to be asking of you, sometimes this is good because it's exciting, sometimes it's not so great because it's a lot of stress and often involves someone complaining about something that is not your fault.

make a phone call to your state representative, reach out to someone that has a similar job. networking is the best and often most successful way of obtaining a job similar to this one. have at least a 4 year college degree, if not also a Master's or be working on a law degree.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

huge organizational skills and time management skills are imperative. networking is a skill that is important and a useful tool for both you and your boss. computer proficiency is important, need for professional demeanor on the phone, in person, need to remain calm in times of stress, remain professional at all times.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

it's a great experience, use it to your advantage and hone your networking skills in order to get a better higher-paying job in the future.
