I work for a mid-sized private, Catholic university. We have approx. 4,600 students and employ approx. 550 people.

I advise student athletes in major and course choices. In addition, I ensure that student athletes remain in good standing with the NCAA and the athletic conference. I also instruct a course dedicated to first-year students.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Must earn at least a master's degree. Must have strong interest in working with students and higher education. I would then recommend getting involved in professional organizations related to the field.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Socail skills - this job requires a lot of interaction with students and other members of the university. Organization skills - this job requires you to multi-task and you cannot be successful at that if you are not organized. Extreme flexibility - this is a job that is student centered which means that you must be willing to drop everything to meet with students - on their time.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Yes. It would be helpful to have an advanced degree and experience with advising.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

I would tell them to be prepared to be not only a course advisor, but also a life advisor as many students need to establish a relationship with a university professional.
