2. Work environment! |
|
Does
your job entail you working with others on a daily basis? Is this
something you like/dislike about your job? Explain
Yes, I have to work with one other person at the cafe at all times, this is generally enjoyable as all the staff know each other for the most part and are friendly with each other. We also have to interact with front desk and housekeeping regularly. The one is fairly easy as the front desk staff consists of students and young people, but it can be a bit more difficult with housekeeping, largely because of language/cultural barriers; they are mostly Hispanic.

Do you work collaboratively with supervisors/managers?
No
|
|
Do you work collaboratively with your co-workers?
Yes

Describe
your work location (e.g., office, home, theatre, in the field) and what
you like/dislike about working in it
My work location is an old building with a huge lounge on the first floor and all different kinds of hostel rooms on the upper floors. Because it is old there is a lot to explore and lots of interesting terraces and spaces but it is also a bit chaotic and disorganized. The disorganization can be irritating especially when you need something and can't find it but otherwise the location has a lot of character which I like.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
|
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Come stay at the hostel and ask the staff how to get hired. They will tell you about the jobs they do and what sorts of openings there are, and they will also likely inform the managers that someone needs a job. From there the managers will sit down with you and usually hire you on the spot if there is a need for help, which generally there is.
|
|
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
The job does not require much education but it requires ability to think quickly and do things in a fast and efficient manner. You have to be able to multi-task and know where everything you need, whether it the ladle to make a cappucino or a binder full of important tourism phone numbers. Social skills and the ability to interact easily with guests and others is also very important, especially since the staff live together and many of them are friends it is important to be able to relate and be a part of that general circle otherwise you will be a complete outsider, and stuck living here as well.
|
|
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
college experience is helpful but not necessary, previous work experience is a must I would say as it is very different and fast-paced compared to regular part-time jobs
|
|
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
