3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Nowadays, the industry is not really training people from scratch. It's been like that for a while. It has to change, though. But some people enter the field now by starting as a Processor (which is more clerical). Then, if they do that well, then in 1 year (typically), they can move to the Account Manager position PROVIDED they made it known that they wanted to move up. If the boss passed them up for a promotion more than once, I'd move to another company & get promoted that way. It would not hurt to take insurance classes (perhaps take CPCU classes) during that 1st year as a Processor. It would show that you're serious.
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
The best people for this position are those with organizational skills, good oral & written communication skills and system savvy. There is always a lot of work to do, and you're the one prioritizing your workload. Also, there is a lot of internal & external correspondence. Since phone/email is part of your daily routine, it's important to be clear and understood. It's also important to be professional at all times (not lose your temper).
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Not if you are mature and learn MS Products (Word, Excel)
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Insurance is a reliable industry to get into. There are a lot of companies and agencies. Change is constant, though. Companies close after 25 years with little warning. They merge, and move, and close without warning. New corporate structures take effect all the time. If you're flexible, you'll be fine. If you want the same job for the rest of your life, this will not be it - it will change on you. But everyone needs insurance.
