2. Work environment! |
Does
your job entail you working with others on a daily basis? Is this
something you like/dislike about your job? Explain
Yes, although a lot of the work is independent as well. I like it because there is a good balance, there are all things that we need to get done on our own, but we all pull together for big events or projects.
Do you work collaboratively with supervisors/managers?
Yes
Do you work collaboratively with your co-workers?
Yes
Describe
your work location (e.g., office, home, theatre, in the field) and what
you like/dislike about working in it
The offices are in the same building as our 2 theaters, box office, and rehearsal studios. I love this because you feel closer to the work onstage, and it makes it easy to have production-related events. Because this is a comparatively small staff, everyone feels involved in what the theater is producing, and gets to interact with the actors, directors, designers, and production staff.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
I would encourage someone going into the Arts to look at all kinds of jobs, and all different kinds of organizations. There are a lot of different options, and because salaries are not high, it is really important that you like and believe in what you are doing. The best way in is through personal connections, because the job market is so competetive.
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
Definitely social skills, because fundraising is so dependent on events and relationships with donors. Also a higher level of organization, understanding of finance, and business sensibility that might be expected of others in the organization.
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Yes, at least an undergraduate degree, and most people start with several years of internship experience.
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Don't lose sight of why you wanted the job in the first place, or the big picture is. It is easy to get bogged down in all of the intricacies of your position, but it's so important to remember the work onstage, and the arts community that we are serving as a whole.
