An insurance underwriting firm that specializes in commercial transportation (ie. construction vehicles, service vehicles, construction equipment, etc), as well as inland marine coverage, and general liability coverage. The firm has more than 10 offices nationwide.

Review files, prep paperwork for underwriter, analyze drivers and coverage, interacts with broker/agent.

Work closely with my underwriter as well as the rest of the office team (only 10 so far). Work closely with insureds agents/brokers in gathering information, documentation, signed forms, etc. This aspect is acceptable but can be a pain when having to hound them to send signed documentation.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Look on the internet (monster, careerbuilder, etc.) or go through recruiting from their college. Could also apply to specific companies websites or look at other job posting sites like craigslist.org

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

organizational skills is important as there is often many different files floating around at the same time with varying degrees of completion - it is often a time sensitive situation so making sure you're on top of whats taking place and with whats due the soonest is important. Social skills are also important as you have to be able to communicate clearly with your underwriter as well as with the agent in making sure you have all the necessary information to understand the risk associated with a file. Technical skills are not as important as long as you are computer literate and can handle Microsoft office with little problem.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

No - Bachelors is more then enough.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Learn your computer system and make friends with your peers as the learning curve is steep at the onset.
