We are an online information site for banks and financial institutions

Data Support Specialist

We have about 20 people. We work from home, and telecommute by email and IM. We also have an online store where people can purchase products relating to banking or financial institutions.

  How long have you been employed in this position?

I have worked there since Jan. 2004

  Please provide a BRIEF description of your duties and responsibilities. (job description)

I do everything from html to helping to manage the store. I also ship products and do customer service for particular products that we offer.

401K only, since I am considered part-time, even though I work at least 30 hours a week.

  Do you feel you are under/well/over compensated at your current position?

I feel that I am undercompensated only in the fact that I am not allowed to work full-time.

I work alone, from home, by telecommuting. I love it, however, sometimes I wish that I could have closer contact with some of my co-workers...since we live all over the US.

I would guess that I work collaboratively, since it takes all of us to produce, advertise, and ship our products.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

I honestly don't know, since I lucked into mine. I got my job though a friend of a friend.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Customer service skills are a must. I also recommend skills in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Html skills can be learned, but now there are other skills like style sheets, where you it would help to know html first. And, of course, general office skills, like typing/faxing/copying come in handy.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Not to be successful, but it does help to get in the door.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Learn everything you can before you start. Get your skills in order. And, lastly, make sure you leave your ego at the door. You must be a team player.
