I work for a four year state University. In my department there are 30 people. Over all there are 17,000 students and 3,000 staff and faculty.

I advise undergraduate students who have not been accepted to the college of their major. I help them choose the right courses and advise them on the requirements for their program. I also teach a first year college success course to freshmen students.

Yes! We see 12-30 students a day. It is nice to have the one on one with students. But you encounter all different types of personalities. It can be stressful at times, but that is with every job.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
|
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
They would have to go to college and graduate school. They can major in anything for their undergraduate degree. They should enter a Student Affairs or Higher Education graduate program. They will need practicum's and internships in advising.

skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
They will need good social skills, communicaition skills, computer skills, and be able to work with those younger than them. They have to be prepared to serve anytype of student no matter what background, religion, beliefs, etc.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Yes. You need to at least have your Master's degree.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Make sure this is what you want to do. It is not a fortune 500 company job. You do it for the satisfaction of preparing the next generations to run this country.
