3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
|
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Get a master's degree in your field of interest (although math and English are the departments which do the most hiring of full-time faculty). Get some part-time teaching experience in grad school and beyond. Develop strong computer skills. Continue to develop professionally out of school by participating in conference activities.

skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
Good writing skills are a must for teaching English :-). Beyond that, strong classroom skills (being innovative, engaging, technologically savvy) go a long way.

An M.A. is usually the minimum degree needed.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Teach part-time at different places to get as much experience as you can. Be patient with job hunting. Don't expect to be hired at the schools where you teach part-time. Apply everywhere!
