Do you feel you are under/well/over compensated at your current position?

I think I earn a fair rate for a job that can be done from a home computer.

2. Work environment!

Does your job entail you working with others on a daily basis? Is this something you like/dislike about your job? Explain

I actually am currently working from home and am lucky for the opportunity to do so. I moved to SC to be near a hospital to have a brain tumor treated. I love that I can still work while I rehab. Without work I would go crazy. Of course, I do work alone, but having grown up an only child I am used to that.

Do you work collaboratively with supervisors/managers?

Yes

Do you work collaboratively with your co-workers?

No

Describe your work location (e.g., office, home, theatre, in the field) and what you like/dislike about working in it

I'm on my own in terms of coworkers and get my orders from the reporters and staff writers who use my services. I get plenty of requests but stick to a select group who report with fairness and accuracy.

Please rank in order of importance from 1-8 (1- most important 8- least important) Assign each number once.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

I think you need to be very fortunate and have an inside track at a college or University. I was fortunate to have been along with a college professor as a proof reader turned part time writer. I do think working in some of the departments like editing can also lead to this sort of job.

What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Excellent language and writing skills-An inquisitive mind-patience-Good Computer skills-Good time management and the ability to meet deadlines-Ability to take both criticism and orders-Good organizational skills-Ability to sit and concentrate for long periods of time.

Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

I feel that you need a good grasp of the English language and know how to work the internet and data base systems well.

What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

To be prepared to work lots of long unpaid hours and to learn that in the Newspaper business a deadline is just that. I think this job would certainly teach punctuality and the value of a good computer with a faST connection. I also think it gives a wonderful glimpse into how your morning paper gets to your doorstep long before it does.
