3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
To work at the college level as professor, you must have a minimum of a master's degree. A Phd would help. Experience is the most important part, so try and do as much as you possibly can on your own in the field of singing and also private teaching. The next most important component is your connections. Keep in touch with every person you meet that might be a valuable resource in either finding a position at a college, or being an important reference. Also, you'll have to be flexible, willing to go to where there is work, not matter the town or area of the country.
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
This career is extremely talent based. You must be a very good singer, as well as actor. The kind of person that would excel in this career would have those skills as well as be organized and driven - as it involves many different levels of competency, such as multiple language proficiency, time management, impeccable memorization skills, and extreme flexibility in schedual.
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Yes, few colleges will hire a new professor without at least a masters degree.
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Make sure you are comfortable with the subject you are about to teach. If you still have worries about your own vocal technique, you will not be able to effectively teach a student. Also, don't stop trying to perform once you've gotten a teaching position, because there is always so much more to learn - take every opportunity thrown at you.
