A small childcare center for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. There are 12 people employed throughout the center. We are a non for profit center working with the Head Start corporation.

I am the infant room lead teacher, I care for the babies while their parents are away at school or work.

I work in a home that has been totally revamped into a childcare center. I love it because it has a very homey feel and a huge yard for the kids.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Call around do different childcare centers in the area, asking if they are hiring. Many places will want prior experience, but if you have children, that helps. You could also start part time to gain experience and then work your way up to full time.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Empathy, very good social skills, you have to be able to communicate well with coworkers and the parents. Definatly need to know how to work with children, have the ability to stay calm in a stressful environment.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Yes

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Just to stay calm when things start to heat up in the classroom. For a few weeks, things might be a little rough until you get used to the job, but then you will get the hang of it and love the job.
