I am always in constant contact with others. I like it very much because it allows you to make new friends, have some sort of company or conversation while working and you get things done easier working with others. But the thing I don't like is that if you happen not to like someone, your basically stuck working with that person.

Describe
your work location (e.g., office, home, theatre, in the field) and what
you like/dislike about working in it
Inside of a large warehouse. I like the fact that our warehouse is so open and large and not a confined area. It makes work seem more comfortable. Also if there is a problem at another end of the warehouse or you need find someone in there, you can locate it/them easily from any point since the area is so open. The only problem is that it gets freezing cold during the winter since we have huge docking doors open the entire work time.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
|
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Frankly, just go to the same company or a similiar one and tell them you would like to apply. That's all I did and it got me the job.
|
|
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
They definitely need to be quick and strong. The most important thing for us is probably to get our shifts done quickly as possible. And we are constantly moving around 50+ pound boxes so they can't be weak. Possibly some what of technical skills. We use handhelds computers to scan and certain packages need to be scanned by entering their information numbers so the person would need some know how of how to use one. Definitely some social skills. No one person can accomplish much by themselves at our work so working together to get the shift done is a major point.
|
|
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
Not necessarily a level of education, more like common sense when it comes to certain things. They would definitely need atleast a day or two of training. It is pretty much impossible to be able to jump right into our line of work and expect to do well.
|
|
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Do not let the workload overwhelm and frustrate you. When I first started working we were getting about 4500 packages a day for the first week and I thought that was alot to deal with until the next week we were getting around 7000 a day which was more along the lines of the norm. And it completely blew me away but I didn't let it put me in a state where I thought I couldn't get it done. Also look for little techniques that make the job easier. For example, when some people unload they give big shoves to a little amount of packages to get them off the truck and its a waste of time and energy. i line packages all the way up the rollers and only push them down enough so I can get the next package on the belt where the last one just was. Things like that.
