I work for an individual Financial Advisor who is a contractor for a major broker dealer. I have two other co-workers. He has about 150 clients, and about $50,000,000 of assets under management.

I prepare the financial plans for clients, by requesting a lot of information, filtering through it, and developing a plan for them. I use the various software packages, develop investment strategies, and insurance proposals. I handle the licensing for everyone in the office, and the compliance requirements.

Yes, I have two co-workers in my office, and my boss. I do not mind working with others when they are competent and focused on their jobs. I do not like excess chatter.

Mainly office, but I do work 5 hours per week at home. I do not particularly like working in an office and dressing up. I do not like being inside so much, and we do not have a window in our office. I like my time at home, although it's easy to get distracted.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Take the first CFP class to see if you enjoy financial planning. Make sure you like dealing with clients at least to some extent. Make sure you are analytical, and would like developing financial plans.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Social skills to deal with clients, you need to be able to communicate with them to get the info you need and help them realize their goals. technical, need to be able to research information and write intelligently for the financial plans. Organization, because you are always busy and need to be able to find things and prioritize.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Not necessarily college per se, but need to be intelligent and willing to learn, CFP helps.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
