I work for an individual or exclusive insurance agent, meaning my boss is a self-employed agent that sells for a nationwide insurance company. This is a small business environment, with 4 employees other than the agent.

My duties include servicing existing client policies, up-selling existing clients and marketing to new prospects to build our client base.

Yes, I work in an office with 4 other people, and a lot of what we do involves communicating with each other. I like working with other, I actually wish to work with more people in a bigger office.

I work in a small office space that is average in quality. I do not like the quality of the building, I feel the environment could be cleaner.

Get your insurance licenses for the state you live in first. Second, approach individual agencies and stress the fact that you are licensed. that makes a big impression.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Multi-tasking ability because you will be overwhelmed with many tasks. Social skills are important because this is a people business and selling involves talking with people constantly.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

I think you need either some work experience or a few years of higher education

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

If you are willing to work hard, you will become very valuable in this industry and gain demand from individual agents.
