I got my job from a university website, they were looking for someone who had a degree.

You need to have done some volunteer experience or actually worked in an industry that preserves the environment. as well as schooling in marketing and p/r.

Yes, both experience and schooling.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Volunteer and take environmental courses in school as a BS.
