My company is a marketing/merchandising company. They do merchandising and marketing for all kinds of companies. I do everything from resets and product placement to training store employees. The company employees over 500 people.

I go into major retailers and representative a major software/game console company. I set displays and do resets of product. I make that the companies products are well displays and that all prices are correct. I also train store employees on current and new products.

I work with the employees in the stores that I visit. I do not work with anyone in my company on a daily basis. My position is basically automomous. I love it! I only have to answer to myself and I don't have to deal with office politics.

I work in various electronic and office supply retailers. My location is different everyday. I like the variety. I never feel bored and its not monotonous.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours?

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

There is a website for the National Association of Retail Merchandisers. Most merchandising companies are members of this website and they post jobs on the career board. You can find most any kind of merchandising work on it.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

You should be able to work on your own with no supervision. You have to a self starter. You cannot be shy because you have to talk to the store employees about your product. You have to be organized to keep up with your schedule and the different things you do at each retailer.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

Some merchandising experience is good.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Find out exactly what the position entails. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions so that you know what you are getting yourself into. Don;t think the job will be easy because no will be watching you. If you don't do your job well someone will find out.
