Yes, we have a group of 6 regular staff, plus student employees. I like this a lot - I'm a social person. We talk together and share duties in the office.

An academic library - we mostly work behind the scenes, but we do have a customer service desk. I also telecommute about 6 years a week.

  If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?

Get experience working in a library - even as a volunteer. Show potential employers that you know your way around the library, and can use its electronic resources, too.

  What skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social skills, organization skills, technical skills)

Technical skills - more and more of my job is done on the computer. You need to have basic computer skills, plus the ability to quickly learn programs specific to your job. You also need a lot of attention to detail. You don't want to waste your patron's time or your department's money borrowing the incorrect item for them.

  Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?

No- if you are a quick learner, you can learn everything on the job.

  What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?

Pay attention, and don't get sloppy.
