I am required to work with others on a daily basis, both my co-workers and clients. I enjoying working with people for the most part. I have no problem working with my co-workers, we get along great. We atlk to each other and work out our problems. It feels like a family at work. We have our poblems and tense moments but we forgive and move on. I also enjoy most of our clients, but some are not so pleasant. I'm not sure if it is the field I work in or just society as a whole, but many consumers will "hold their breath" until they get their way. I do not enjoy working with these type of people.

3. How should someone new to the workforce get a J-O-B like yours? |
If someone wanted to go about getting a job similar to yours, what would you recommend for him or her to do?
Understand how to work with people, animals, and emotions. Keep an open-mind because the way one person feels about an animal might be totally different with what the next person feels. For example, one person might feel their pet is their "baby", but another person might think of their pets as something you basicly feed and water. Also, pateince is very important! Your average animal owner know very little about proper care and preventions for a pet. And you have to be patient in your repeating of information and trying to make the owner understand that we are not trying to sell you things because we want to make a buck, but we are trying to sell them things are for the best interest of their pet.
What
skills do you think a person should have if they want to pursue a
position like yours? Please be specific and explain why (e.g., social
skills, organization skills, technical skills)
To be a head receptionist in an animal hospital, first and formost you must be a people person and then secondly an animal person. You will deal more with the person then the animal and if the person does not trust you then you will never get to deal and love their animal. One must also be organized and a big multi-tasker! One must also be good under stress and deal with a stressful situation and a stressed owner.
Do you feel that you need a certain level of education or training to be successful in your job?
A background in animal health is a big plus, but not necessary.
What advice would you give to someone who was about to start work in your position/ line of work?
Understand as much as you can about the basics of animal health care because as a receptionist you will be the first to lead the client about the best for their pet. Also you have to be friendly and ready to work everyday. You want to convey to the client that you love your job. Also, be confident in your answers and actions in order to gain trust.
